A Japanese hanging temple bell (Tsurigane) dating from the Edo to Meiji period (late 19th – early 20th century). The bronze bell is richly decorated with cast inscriptions and ornamental bands in relief. Prominent large characters include: 「寺」 (Temple) 「山」 (Mountain) 「寒」 (Cold) 「古」 (Ancient) Additional inscriptions visible around the body include: 「佛日」 (Buddha Sun) 「増輝」 (Increasing Radiance) 「帝道」 (Imperial Way) 「退呂」「皇国」 (Imperial Nation) 「激国」「法輪」 (Dharma Wheel) 「常𨍭」 (Eternal Turning – referring to the turning of the Dharma wheel) The bell features a traditional arched suspension loop at the top and is accompanied by a wooden display stand with openwork decorative elements, as well as a striker (stick).
