Loeschcke X/Hayes I oil lamp produced in North Africa, probably in the region of Carthage (Tunisia), which was a major center for the export of “clear sigillata” pottery throughout the Mediterranean. The eagle motif on the mirror (the central part or discus) was common in Roman art. The eagle often holds a crown or ribbon in its beak, symbolizing victory or imperial power. They were used both in the home and in temples or as funeral offerings.
The eagle was the symbol par excellence of the Roman Empire and its legions. It represented supreme authority, strength, and courage. The eagle was considered the sacred bird of Jupiter, the king of the gods. By holding a crown in its beak, the eagle acts as a divine messenger granting victory or recognition directly from Olympus. In funerary contexts, the Romans believed that the eagle carried the soul of the deceased (especially that of the emperor) to the gods. Owning a lamp with this motif could symbolize the hope of immortality or spiritual protection.
Provenance: Former Dutch private collection Mejns and private collection Aachen, acquired between 1970 and 1990; acquired at auction Gorny & Mosch, Germany, 2025.
