Edon is one of most important simbol of Ogboni society. The Ogboni society is a powerful, traditional Yoruba institution that historically functioned as a judicial, political, and religious, or "secret," council. Composed of honored elderly men and women, they served as kingmakers and held the power to check the authority of monarchs. A stylized equestrian figure representing an important person on horseback, often sculpted in bronze or brass according to Yoruba tradition. The figure wears conical headdress and Opa Edon ritual staff, symbols of power and adopts a hieratic posture. The horse, a symbol of prestige, is rendered in a compact and geometric style, typical of African foundries using the lost-wax casting technique.
