About Chōza Yamamoto Since 1990, when he created imperial ceremonial sake cups bearing the Imperial Chrysanthemum Crest for Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan, Chōza Yamamoto of Myōsen Tōbō has received frequent commissions from the Imperial Household. His works have been used for His Majesty the Emperor’s Enthronement Ceremony, as well as for welcoming foreign dignitaries, including Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Kutani-yaki is said to have been first fired in 1655 in Kutani Village, Echizen County, Kaga Province, during the early Edo period. It was commissioned by Maeda Toshitsugu, the lord of Oyamazaki Castle, to Gotō Saizaburō, a potter in his domain. Kutani-yaki is characterized by its richly colored glazes and bold, vigorous painting, distinguishing it from other overglaze enamel ceramics.
