Signed, André Breton - Spojité nádoby - 1934

I am offering an exceptionally rare copy of the first Czech edition of Spojité nádoby (1934) by André Breton, founder of Surrealism. This Czech translation of Les vases communicants was published in Prague in 1934 by Spolek výtvarných umělců Mánes, translated by Jindřich Honzl and Vítězslav Nezval. This is a highly desirable collector’s item, signed by André Breton. The volume is in a later binding, with the original cover designed by Toyen (Marie Čermínová) bound in. The cover by Toyen is considered an iconic example of Czech Surrealist design, making this edition exceptional not only from a literary but also from an artistic perspective. The book is one of Breton’s key theoretical works, exploring the relationship between dreams and waking reality. The Prague edition of 1934 is of particular historical importance, reflecting Breton’s close ties with the Czechoslovak avant-garde. This copy combines several significant attributes: the first Czech edition, an original Toyen cover, and Breton’s autograph. A rare opportunity for collectors of Surrealism, avant-garde art, and interwar literature. Condition: The cover is unfortunately slightly trimmed on the right-hand side; otherwise, the book is in very good condition.
