In the 4th century BC, Syracuse was the most powerful city in Sicily, ruled by the tyrant Dionysius the Elder, who fought against Carthage. After his death, the city experienced serious political turmoil under Dionysius the Younger and internal struggles. Towards the end of the century, Timoleon restored order and brought stability and prosperity back to Syracuse.
