Item Description
A superb Shino-ware (Shino-yaki) guinomi (sake cup) by the ceramicist Hōzan, presented in its original tomobako (artist-signed wooden box). This piece exemplifies the timeless beauty of Mino Shino ware — one of Japan's most celebrated ceramic traditions, originating in the Momoyama period (late 16th century) in the Mino region of present-day Gifu Prefecture.
The cup displays a striking composition of thick, milky white chōseki (feldspar) glaze layered over a clay body fashioned from mogusa-tsuchi, the characteristic soft, sandy soil of the Mino region. The exterior surface is animated by a bold iron-painted design — an abstract mountain-like zigzag motif executed in rich dark brown iron pigment (oni-ita iron wash), applied beneath the glaze and fired to produce the warm mahogany tones characteristic of e-shino (picture-shino) ware. The firing has produced generous areas of warm orange hi-iro (fire-blush), the natural reddish-orange colour that emerges where the glaze is thin, lending the piece the distinctive wabi-sabi aesthetic prized by Japanese tea connoisseurs.
The form is hand-thrown with a slightly irregular, organic rim typical of high-quality temomi (hand-kneaded) Shino work. The kōdai (foot ring) is low and unassuming, with a small iron mark on the base. The interior is glazed in smooth milky white, flecked with natural iron spots from the firing atmosphere. The cup comes complete with its original artist-signed wooden storage box (tomobako), inscribed with the title 志野ぐい呑 (Shino Guinomi) and sealed with the artist's signature and red hanko seal reading 保山 (Hōzan).
This is a fine example of contemporary Shino ware, combining the aesthetic values of Momoyama-era tea ceramics with the hand of a skilled individual studio artist.

Artist Profile
保山 Hōzan
Hōzan is a studio ceramicist working in the Shino (shino-yaki) tradition of Mino ware, the celebrated Japanese ceramic style originating in Gifu Prefecture during the Momoyama period (late 16th century). Working under the artistic name Hōzan, the artist has mastered the demanding techniques of Shino glazing — applying thick feldspar (chōseki) glaze over hand-kneaded Mino clay bodies and achieving the characteristic milky-white surfaces with natural fire-blush (hi-iro) tones. The bold iron-painted (tetsu-e) design on this guinomi reflects a confident, expressive brushwork style rooted in the classical e-shino tradition. This work is accompanied by a tomobako (artist-signed wooden box), a mark of authenticity and artistic standing in Japanese studio ceramics.
