Korwar Style Ancestor Figure, Mother and Child North Coast West Papua, Cenderawashi Bay (Geelvink Bay) Circa 1950 A Korwar-style ancestor figure originating from the north coast of West Papua, dating to approximately circa 1950. This hand-carved hardwood sculpture represents a crouching mother holding a standing child. The child stands upright on the woman's knees, positioned directly in front of her body, emphasizing the protective and nurturing relationship between mother and child. Both figures display traditional stylistic features characteristic of Korwar carvings. Sometimes a korwar has a shield with a human figure in front of him. The sculpture retains original pigment decoration. The child is adorned with black and white pigment, while the mother has black-painted hair and white pigment surrounding the eyes. Carved from solid hardwood, the figure shows a beautiful shiny patina, partly thanks to the use and the varnish.
