Large Art Deco Uranium Glass Vase – Verreries de Scailmont, Belgium, 1930s
An elegant and striking Art Deco vase produced in the 1930s by the renowned Belgian glassworks Verreries de Scailmont. This model is documented in the factory’s original catalogue and is illustrated in the reference book dedicated to the manufactory, with the catalogue page preserved today in the Rakow Research Library of the Corning Museum of Glass, New York.
The vase features a tall, slender silhouette with vertically fluted sides that rise gracefully into a softly shaped rim, resting on a sculptural, stepped base. Its proportions are refined and architectural, perfectly reflecting the aesthetics of the Art Deco period.
Crafted in uranium glass, the piece displays a delicate yellow-green tone in daylight, transforming into a vivid luminous green under UV light. This captivating optical effect adds a dynamic and almost magical presence to the object.
With a height of approximately 32 cm, the vase has an impressive scale, making it a strong decorative statement whether displayed alone or with a minimal floral arrangement.
Uranium glass is no longer produced, and in recent years it has become increasingly sought after by collectors for both its historical significance and its unique visual properties.
A beautiful and authentic example of Belgian Art Deco glass, combining documented provenance, elegant design, and collectible appeal.
Excellent vintage condition, no chips or cracks. A true survivor of nearly a century, glowing with original vibrance.
Scailmont glass ( Verreries de Scailmont) in Belgium, is renowned for its exquisite Art Deco and Art Nouveau designs. Founded by Henri-Raphaël Hirsch, (who had established the “Saint-Laurent Glassworks” a few years earlier) in 1901 in Manage, the factory specialized in molded and satin-finished glassware, featuring intricate etching, enameling, and sandblasting techniques. Collaborations with renowned designers such as Henri Heemskerk and Charles Catteau brought international acclaim, particularly after the 1925 Paris Exposition.
Scailmont’s products, including vases and tableware, were often marked with the factory’s name or designer signatures, making them highly collectible. The company also partnered with brands like Boch Frères and Val-Saint-Lambert
Despite industry challenges, Scailmont remained a key player in Belgium’s glass industry until it merged with Durobor in 1976 and ceased operations in 2000. Today, Scailmont glass is prized for its elegant designs and fine craftsmanship.
