熊本幸平 Kumamoto Kohei — Banko Ware Flower Vase (花入) with Original Box This elegant flower vase (花入, hanaire) is a fine example of Banko ware (萬古焼, Banko-yaki), one of Japan's most esteemed ceramic traditions originating in Mie Prefecture in the mid-18th century. The work bears the mark of ceramic artist Kumamoto Kohei and comes in its original wooden presentation box (tomobako), along with a matching cloth wrap (nunobiraki) and an accompanying leaflet (shiori) — a mark of the maker's pride in their craft and a collector's ideal provenance set. The vase features a tall, slender cylindrical form rising gracefully to approximately 26 cm, with a gently squared silhouette that conveys both classical restraint and understated elegance. The surface displays Banko ware's characteristic subtle, earthy glaze with refined hand-applied decoration — the interplay of texture and tone characteristic of this distinguished regional kiln tradition. The squared base transitions smoothly into the body, providing visual stability and a satisfying sense of weight in hand. Banko ware (萬古焼) has been designated as a traditional craft product (dentō kōgeihin) of Japan. Known for its semi-stoneware quality, distinctive resistance to heat, and the unique depth of its glazes and clay bodies, Banko-yaki is prized by collectors of Japanese ceramics worldwide. This vase is a beautifully restrained example of Banko's artistic tradition, and would serve equally well as a floral arrangement vessel (hanaire) in an ikebana or chado context, or as a sculptural display piece in any contemporary interior. Comes complete with tomobako (original wooden box), nunobukuro (cloth wrap), and shiori (booklet/leaflet). Size Height: 26 cm Width: 12 cm Depth: 12 cm Condition There are some signs of use, scuffs, peeling, and minor scratches.Overall in very good condition for its age. Minor surface wear consistent with age and use Artist Profile 熊本幸平 Kumamoto Kohei — Banko Ware Ceramic Artist Kumamoto Kohei is a ceramic artist working in the Banko ware (Banko-yaki) tradition, one of Japan's nationally designated traditional craft forms produced primarily in Mie Prefecture, centered on the city of Yokkaichi.
