This exquisite flat tea bowl (hira-chawan) is a work by Yamane Yoshiko, the third-generation master of the Kamikawa-yaki Kamikawayama-gama kiln, located in Kurayoshi, Tottori Prefecture. The piece comes complete with its original signed wooden box (tomobako) and a formal certificate of provenance (yurai-sho).
Kamikawa-yaki (上神焼) is one of Tottori Prefecture's most celebrated ceramic traditions, with roots dating back to the mid-Edo period around 1750. After periods of transition under various kiln names — including Hakubiyama and Gyokuhaku — the kiln was revived by the first-generation master who studied under the celebrated ceramic artist Hirano Doun. The hallmark of Kamikawa-yaki is its vibrant cinnabar red glaze (shinsya), achieved through the careful application of copper oxide in reduction firing.
This tea bowl is a superb example of that tradition. The exterior presents a breathtaking deep crimson-red shinsya glaze mottled with lighter speckles that shift toward pale blue-grey at the foot rim, creating a natural, cloud-like gradation of color. The interior is glazed in a soft, luminous pale celadon-blue, offering a serene contrast to the richness of the outer surface. Fine, natural crazing lines (kannyu) visible in the glaze are a mark of authentic high-temperature firing and are considered an aesthetic virtue in Japanese ceramics. The foot (koudai) is left unglazed, revealing a clean reddish-brown clay body with a wheel-turned spiral pattern — a testament to skilled rokuro (wheel-throwing) craftsmanship. The kiln seal is impressed on the base.
Flat tea bowls of this type are traditionally used for serving matcha in summer, when their wide, open form allows the tea to cool gently. This piece, however, transcends its functional role — it is a work of art that embodies the long heritage of a regional ceramic tradition carried forward across three generations with great skill and passion.

Yamane Yoshiko is the third-generation master of the Kamikawa-yaki Kamikawayama-gama kiln in Kurayoshi, Tottori Prefecture, Japan. The Kamikawa-yaki tradition traces its origins to the mid-Edo period (c. 1750), and was revived in the Meiji era by the first-generation master, who trained under the distinguished ceramic artist Hirano Doun. The second generation, Tōichi (Tamiya), further refined the kiln's signature style before passing it to Yoshiko. Under her stewardship, the kiln continues to excel in the vivid shinsya (cinnabar) glazes for which Kamikawa-yaki is renowned, while also exploring new creative territory including yuteki tenmoku (oil-spot glaze) and kinzai youhen (gold-lustre kiln transformation).
