Item Description
木村陶峰 Kimura Toho — 備前焼 緋襷 花入 / Bizen Ware Hidasuki Flower Vase — Toho, Tosho-en
This breath-takingly beautiful flower vase is a work by Toho Kimura, the second-generation master of Tosho-en (陶正園), one of the most prestigious and historic kiln establishments in Bizen, Okayama Prefecture.
It is executed in the celebrated hidasuki (緋襷 — "scarlet sash") technique, which produces some of the most visually dramatic effects in all of Japanese ceramics.
The form is a classic long-necked bottle vase (hana-ire) of refined elegance: a full, rounded globular body rises to a slender, gently tapering neck that flares softly at the rim.
The overall silhouette is restrained and perfectly proportioned — a shape that has been refined through centuries of Bizen tradition, here rendered with assured mastery.
The surface of the pale buff-cream bizen clay is traversed by a network of sweeping, freely flowing scarlet and russet marks — the signature traces of rice straw (wara) wrapped around the vessel before firing. These marks arc and cross the belly of the vase with a natural, spontaneous energy, like abstract brushstrokes of flame, making each piece entirely unique.
The contrast between the warm cream of the clay body and the intense crimson-orange of the hidasuki markings is nothing short of breathtaking.
The artist's name 陶峰 (Toho) is incised into the lower body of the vase.
The piece comes with its original tomobako (共箱 — artist's wooden box), inscribed: 備前 花入 陶峰造 (Bizen hana-ire, made by Toho). Unused and in perfect condition.

Artist Profile
木村陶峰 Kimura Toho is the second-generation master of Tosho-en (陶正園), one of Bizen's most distinguished kiln establishments.
Tosho-en was founded in 1913 by Shoji Kimura, a son of the 12th-generation head of the historic Kimura Sohonke Koraku-en — one of the ancient "Six Kiln Families" (roku-sei) of Bizen whose lineage can be traced back to the feudal period.
Toho studied law at Chuo University in Tokyo before returning to Bizen and assuming leadership of Tosho-en in 1962, guiding it through the difficult postwar years to become one of the most productive and well-regarded kiln establishments in the region.
His philosophy — "Good works at prices people can be glad to pay" — reflects a deep respect for both the craft tradition and the people who live with these objects. Tosho-en is particularly renowned for its flower vessels and tea ceremony wares, and Toho's hidasuki technique is held in especially high regard among collectors of classic Bizen ware.
