Title Fine 19th Century Japanese Lacquer Suzuribako - Gold Maki-e & Nashiji - Signed “Koma” (古満) -Meiji Period ⸻ Description This is an exceptional 19th-century Japanese lacquer writing box (Suzuribako), dating from the late Edo to early Meiji period, representing the pinnacle of traditional maki-e craftsmanship. The lid is finely decorated with an intricate gold maki-e composition known as “Kumo-no-Ishi” (Clouds and Stones), expressing a refined poetic aesthetic through natural motifs—typical of high-ranking scholar’s objects of the time. The piece is signed “Koma” (古満) in gold lacquer on the lower left. The Koma family was among the most prestigious lineages of lacquer artists, serving as official maki-e artisans to the Tokugawa Shogunate. This work exemplifies their mastery, particularly through the use of dense Nashiji (pear-skin lacquer), applied to the interior and edges, creating a deep and richly shimmering gold surface. The contrast between the lustrous black lacquer and the delicate gold bamboo and floral motifs demonstrates a highly sophisticated design sensibility. The interior retains its original components, including a high-quality inkstone (Suzuri) and a circular metal water dropper (Suiteki), both showing appropriate aging and patina consistent with the period. This Suzuribako is a fine example of Japanese lacquer art from a significant transitional era, and a highly desirable piece for collectors of Edo–Meiji period works. ⸻ Dimensions • Box: 24.2 × 12.1 × 4.2 cm • Inkstone: 13.5 × 7.6 cm ⸻ Condition In excellent antique condition for its age. The lacquer maintains a beautiful luster, with only minor surface wear and small chips to the corners consistent with age and use. The metal water dropper shows natural oxidation (patina), supporting its authenticity. No major cracks or significant restorations are observed. Please refer to the high-resolution images for further details. We will use Japan Post or for shipping. Please allow extra time for delivery as the items are shipped from Japan. Please note that the listed prices do not include customs duties and taxes. Please note that items may have scratches or stains due to age.
