The Cross in its religious symbolism obviously represents the crucifixion, but on a deeper level represents self-surrender, detachment from everything that is personality. It is the break with all the mechanics of personality, and therefore with the wheel of reincarnations.

When there is the crucifixion of an initiate, cosmic crucifixion, he is completely liberated from the plane of reincarnations. And if he returns, it is only to contribute something, no longer to experience something.

The Cross breaks all relation with the earthly aspect, with the physical manifestation, because there is sublimation of the lower parts to only live in the upper parts. The Sun is a blazing star and every time one wants to connect with its energy, one must integrate with solar energy. And the higher the initiations, the more intense this integration becomes.

The Cross has no particular function in occultism. However, on earth thousands of years of Christianity have energized and strengthened it, allowing priests, and in particular exorcists, to use it as protection although originally it was not a very powerful symbol.

This is because humans have creative power. And consequently they can invent any symbol, and if they are sufficiently numerous and patient enough to wait for the energy to develop around that symbol.
