Exquisite Glass Sponge with Symbiotic Shrimps – Camotes Sea, Philippines
Collected at a depth of 120 meters in the Camotes Sea, Philippines, this exceptional glass sponge displays the delicate silica lattice typical of the class Hexactinellida. Its intricate structure creates a naturally elegant and sculptural form.
Inside the sponge resides a pair of Spongicola venusta shrimps, which entered the sponge as larvae and, once mature, became permanently enclosed within. This remarkable symbiotic relationship inspired traditional Asian symbolism, where such specimens were given as wedding gifts representing eternal companionship and fidelity.
A fascinating and highly decorative marine specimen—both scientifically significant and visually captivating.
Note: The shrimps are visible inside the sponge’s internal cavity. Acrylic stand included.
