Item Description:
Japanese Illustrated Woodblock-Printed Book (Ehon Wahon, 絵入り和本) — "Kōmei Gassen-ki: Kawanakajima Sensō" (高名合戦記 川中嶋戦争), Vol. II (下)
A rare and captivating Japanese illustrated woodblock-printed book (ehon, 絵本) presenting the legendary battles of Kawanakajima (Kawanakajima no Tatakai, 川中島の戦い) — the series of famous confrontations fought between the rival warlords Takeda Shingen (武田信玄) and Uesugi Kenshin (上杉謙信) between 1553 and 1564, which rank among the most celebrated episodes of the Sengoku (Warring States) period.
This is the lower volume (ge, 下) of the work titled Kōmei Gassen-ki: Kawanakajima Sensō (高名合戦記 川中嶋戦争 — "Records of Famous Battles: The Kawanakajima War").
The text is presented in classical Japanese brushstroke-style woodblock typography, interspersed throughout with vivid, hand-coloured woodblock illustrations (ukiyo-e style) depicting armoured samurai warriors (bushi) in fierce combat, cavalry charges, sieges, and the dramatic confrontations between the two rival generals.
Of particular note, the closing pages of this volume include a coloured woodblock illustration and text dedicated to Suwa Daimyōjin (訪諏上下大明神 — the Great Deity of Suwa Shrine), the principal tutelary deity of Shinano Province (present-day Nagano Prefecture) and the divine protector of the Takeda clan.
The depiction of the sacred gohei (御幣 — ritual wand) adorned with a purple diamond-shaped crest reflects the deep interweaving of Shinto belief and samurai culture that characterised the Sengoku period, lending this volume an additional layer of spiritual and historical significance beyond its military narrative.
The illustrations throughout are executed with the bold, energetic brushwork characteristic of Edo-period musha-e (武者絵 / warrior prints): warriors clad in elaborate yoroi armour wielding swords, spears, and bows are rendered with dramatic dynamism.
The colour palette employs traditional pigments — rich blue-greens, ochre, red, purple, and black — applied with the characteristic graphic quality of woodblock printing.
Bound in traditional Japanese yamato-toji (大和綴じ) style with thread binding; the illustrated cover depicts two armoured warriors in close combat.
The endpapers bear handwritten inscriptions in ink by a former owner, consistent with the personal book ownership culture of the Edo period.
An evocative piece of Edo-period popular illustrated literature, offering collectors a rare window into samurai culture, Shinto religious tradition, historical storytelling, and the woodblock printing tradition of pre-modern Japan.
