A charming damask table linen set, composed of a generous tablecloth and four napkins, dating from the late 19th century. Each piece is graced with a delicately hand-embroidered “B-B” monogram, ( 9cm by 20cm) worked in satin and corded stitch. The embroidery is of remarkable finesse, its soft, rounded curves unfolding like petals. Around it, a poetic floral motif comes to life—an abundant garland of leaves and clustered blossoms, as if gathered from a garden in full bloom. The antique white linen, luminous and time-softened, remains in beautiful condition, freshly washed and gently pressed, ready to grace a table once more. This set carries with it the quiet soul of a château near my home. For over a century, it lay undisturbed, folded away in one of the great Normandy dowry armoires—those silent guardians of family treasures—waiting patiently in the dark for its moment to return to the light. Over the past two years, I have had the privilege of discovering several such linens from this family, whose heritage spans four generations. As time moves forward, these heirlooms are slowly being released, like whispered memories. Not long ago, the family gathered—children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—to decide the fate of these treasures. Yet none chose to keep them, perhaps unaware of the stories stitched into their very fabric, or daunted by the care they require. There is a quiet melancholy in this, as though a branch of the family tree has gently let go of its past. Originally, this set would have included six napkins; two have been lost to time. And yet, remarkably, the remaining pieces appear never to have been used—preserved in their purity, as if waiting for a table, a candlelit evening, and new memories to be woven into their threads. The napkin is framed with garlands of large leaves. They measure 82.5cm by 65cm.
