Item Description Ancient Fire — Bizen Ware Cylinder Vase with Dramatic Natural Kiln Effects This handsome cylindrical vase captivates immediately with its dramatic, ever-shifting surface — a living record of fire, ash, and time. The body glows with deep terracotta reds that melt into warm ochres at the shoulder, before dissolving into cool, smoky grey-browns toward the base. This breathtaking gradation is entirely the work of nature: no glaze was applied. Every hue was born inside the kiln, shaped by the movement of flame, the fall of wood ash, and the shifting oxygen levels over many days of firing. The lower portion displays sangiri — a prized reduction effect where the clay, partially starved of oxygen, develops its characteristic steely grey-brown tone, creating a striking visual counterpoint to the fiery upper body. Delicate goma (literally "sesame seeds") — tiny specks of fused ash — are scattered across the surface, adding depth and tactile richness. The subtle horizontal throwing lines that wrap the cylinder speak quietly of the potter's hand at the wheel, giving the form a gentle, rhythmic movement. A potter's seal (toin) is neatly impressed on the flat, unglazed base. The cylindrical form itself is masterfully resolved — slightly waisted, with a composed, upright presence that would display a single stem or an ikebana arrangement with effortless elegance. This vase is a work of Bizen ware (Bizen-yaki), produced in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture — one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns (Rokkoyo) with a continuous history of over a thousand years. Bizen ware is fired unglazed in wood-burning anagama or noborigama kilns at temperatures exceeding 1,200°C for seven to fourteen days. It is designated a Traditional Craft of Japan (Dento Kogei) and is deeply revered in the world of the tea ceremony for its embodiment of the wabi aesthetic — finding beauty in simplicity, imperfection, and the unadorned. Size Height: 21 cm Width: 9 cm (diameter) Weight: 780 g Condition The vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs; the surface patina and natural kiln markings are entirely as fired. Artist Profile The piece bears a potter's seal (toin) on the base, though the specific artist's identity has not been confirmed. The technical mastery evident in the firing and form is consistent with a trained Bizen ceramicist. Bizen ware (Bizen-yaki), produced in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, is one of Japan's oldest and most esteemed ceramic traditions, designated as a Traditional Craft (Dento Kogei) in 1982. Its hallmark is unglazed, wood-fired stoneware fired for seven to fourteen days, producing unique natural surface effects that cannot be replicated. 【Shipping Notice】 Due to the current situation in the Middle East, shipment from Japan may not be possible to certain regions.
