Item Description
Title of Artwork: Wabi Bloom — Japanese Stoneware Matcha Bowl with Iron-Painted Botanical Motif
A large and beautifully crafted Japanese matcha bowl (chawan), distinguished by its refined earthen aesthetic and expressive iron-painted decoration. One face of the bowl is adorned with an elegant botanical composition — two drooping flower buds reminiscent of snowdrops, delicate fern fronds, and slender grass blades — rendered in fluid iron brushwork against a warm sandy ground. The upper body is encircled by rhythmic horizontal carved grooves (shinogi), created by paring the clay after throwing, which impart a tactile, sculptural quality to the form and cast subtle shadow lines across the surface.
The clay body is coarse-grained and richly textured, characteristic of Shigaraki-style stoneware, with a warm ochre and sandy-brown tonality. The interior and reverse side are covered in a rich, unadorned dark-brown glaze with clearly visible throwing rings that accentuate the handcrafted quality. The foot (kodai) is unglazed, revealing the natural fired clay in a warm terracotta tone, and bears a potter's seal stamp, though the maker remains unidentified.
With a generous diameter of 13.5 cm and a height of 9 cm, this is a full-sized chawan well-suited for both usucha (thin tea) and koicha (thick tea). The wide, smooth interior creates a striking visual contrast when filled with vibrant green matcha. This piece beautifully embodies the wabi-sabi spirit — humble in material yet deeply rich in artisanal expression.
