【Product details】
A yunomi tea cup by Shimaoka Tatsuzo (1919–2007), a ceramic artist who was designated a Living National Treasure and one of the leading figures of Mashiko ware.
The cup features his signature Jomon inlay technique, where rope impressions are combined with inlaid slip to create textured geometric patterns. This method draws inspiration from ancient Jomon pottery and reflects the influence of his father’s braided cord craftsmanship, resulting in a distinctive and highly recognisable surface.
The form is simple and well balanced, with a gently flared rim suited for comfortable use. The glaze presents warm, earthy tones with natural variations, enhanced by subtle iron accents that add depth and character.
Mashiko ware is a traditional Japanese ceramic style that developed in Tochigi Prefecture and is closely associated with the Mingei (folk craft) movement. It is valued for its honest craftsmanship, rustic charm, and the natural beauty of its clay and glazes, often embracing irregularities that reflect the hand of the maker.
Shimaoka studied under Hamada Shoji and became a central figure in the Mingei movement, contributing significantly to the development and international recognition of Japanese folk ceramics. He was designated a Living National Treasure in 1996.
The wooden box is signed and sealed. A printed biography sheet is included.
Very good vintage condition. Box shows age-related patina; cord slightly frayed. Please refer to the photos for details.
