青铜南印度光环 prabhāvali - 青銅色 - 南印度 - Nayaka 18世纪
A finely cast bronze prabhāvali (aureole or backplate) from a Vaishnavite devotional sculpture, South India, 18th century.
The arch is of elegant, cusped form, richly ornamented with scrolling foliage and stylised makara motifs, culminating in a kirtimukha mask at the apex, a protective emblem commonly associated with temple iconography. At the centre rises a delicately modelled vegetal shaft terminating in a bud-like finial, symbolising auspicious growth and divine presence. The lower register is flanked by architectural pilasters, suggesting a shrine-like framework intended to frame and exalt the principal deity.
The surface displays a warm, deep brown patina with traces of ritual wear, consistent with prolonged devotional use. Areas of minor loss and wear, particularly along the lower edge and sides, attest to its age and liturgical handling.
Such backplates were traditionally affixed behind bronze icons of Vishnu or his avatars during worship, enhancing the divine aura of the image and reflecting the sophisticated metalworking traditions of South India in the late pre-modern period.
