Porcelain Plate China “Blue and White” River Landscape Scene, Qing Dynasty, 19th Century
Magnificent Chinese porcelain plate handcrafted in cobalt blue under glaze. This piece is a classic example of export porcelain destined for European and American markets.
Qing Dynasty, probably mid to late 19th century (Daoguang or Guangxu period).
Features a detailed traditional-style river landscape. Architectural elements (pagodas and teahouses), native vegetation (weeping willows and pines), and a typical boat are all surrounded by mountains that add depth to the composition.
The plate rim is decorated with a complex geometric border alternating floral motifs and honeycomb/reticulated patterns, delineating the central scene with great elegance.
The cobalt blue presents different tonal gradations, indicating manual brush application. The glaze has a slightly bluish/grayish tint characteristic of authentic porcelain from this period.
The base shows the unglazed foot ring, where one can appreciate the hard, compact porcelain paste, with small natural iron specks ("pepper specks"), a sign of authenticity in antique pieces.
Material: Hard-paste porcelain.
Technique: Cobalt blue under glaze.
Condition: in very good preserved condition. Check for "frittings" (small glaze skips) on the edge.
Measurements: 22.5 cm
