Typical late 16th century pewter spoon with Tudor Rose in the bowl, initials A E in the crown of the rose. Large round bowl with hexagonal stem. -> The Tudor Rose was introduced after Henry VII’s victory in 1485 (the union of the red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York, via his marriage to Elizabeth of York. It remained a symbol throughout the Tudor dynasty (Henry VII to Elizabeth I), roughly 1485–1603. Length: ± 18,5 cm Diameter bowl: ± 79,2 mm Intact and in good solid condition. The display stand is for photographic purposes only. Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format). -> Pewter spoons became common household items in England and northern Europe by the late 15th century, replacing wood or bone spoons for the middle classes. Pewter was a practical yet prestigious material, cheaper than silver but elegant enough for the table. Spoons like this often formed part of a personal eating set, every person carried their own spoon to meals. The fig-shaped bowl form appears around 1450–1550 and gradually shifts to oval by the early 17th century.
