SASANIAN KINGDOM — Silver Drachm of Shapur II (AD 309–379) Mint: Kabul (Mint IX) Diameter: 22 mm Weight: 3.83 g Reference: SNS type Ib1/3a (pl. 9, 106); Göbl type Ia/6a ________________________________________ Description This silver drachm of Shapur II, struck at the Kabul mint (Mint IX) between approximately AD 320–379, is a representative example of Sasanian imperial coinage. Obverse: Bust of Shapur II facing right, wearing a mural crown surmounted by a korymbos and adorned with an inner ribbon. Reverse: Fire altar with ribbons and a bust emerging from the flames, flanked by two attendants, each wearing a mural crown with a korymbos. Traces of Pahlavi legend are visible on the altar shaft and base. ________________________________________ Condition Good condition overall and clear. Some surface staining is present but does not significantly detract from the overall appearance. ________________________________________ Historical Note During the reign of Shapur II, the Sasanian Empire expanded eastward into regions corresponding to modern Afghanistan and Pakistan, including Kabulistan. The establishment of mints such as Kabul (Mint IX) reflects the consolidation of imperial authority in these areas, supporting both administration and trade. Coins like this illustrate the integration of these regions into the Sasanian economic and political system.
