黄昏时的金色森林——轮岛漆沈金板「Tachiki」 - 漆 - 吠木正樹 Hoegi Masaki - 日本 - 1900–2000

Item Description 吠木正樹 Hoegi Masaki "Tachiki" (立樹 — Standing Trees) Wajima-nuri Lacquerware Panel with Chinkin Decoration This exceptional lacquerware panel titled Tachiki ("Standing Trees") is a masterwork of chinkin (沈金) — the celebrated gold-engraving technique for which Wajima is renowned throughout Japan. With a fine chisel, the artist incises intricate designs into the mirror-black lacquered surface and fills them with gold, creating imagery of breathtaking precision and depth. Here, a grove of five slender, golden trees rises with quiet authority against a deep black lacquer sky, their every branch and bud rendered in astonishing detail — a testament to years of disciplined mastery. Below, a bold, luminous arc of turquoise-blue lacquer — suggesting a snowy hillside or tranquil water — grounds the composition with a modern sensibility. The contrast of warm gold and electric blue against the black ground is simultaneously classical and strikingly contemporary. This is a technically demanding and highly refined work. Visible under magnification, the countless individual marks of the chinkin chisel build up into intricate lace-like textures in the branches and canopy, while the trunks of the trees — rendered in silver-toned lacquer — pass seamlessly from the black ground into the shimmering turquoise field below. The artist's signature appears in the lower right in ink. The work is mounted in a polished silver aluminium inner frame set within a wide cream fabric mat and a substantial silver outer frame, giving it an elegant, museum-quality presentation. A shiori (栞) — a biographical certificate — accompanies the work. Size Height: 23.5 cm Width: 17.5 cm Frame: Height: 43 cm Width: 37 cm Depth: 5 cm Weight 1,692 g Condition The lacquer panel itself is in good condition with no damage to the artwork; the frame shows minor surface soiling and there is some aged tape residue and light rust staining on the hanging hardware at the back, which does not affect the display or the work itself. Artist Profile 吠木正樹 Hoegi Masaki is a Japanese lacquerware artist based in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, specialising in the chinkin (沈金) tradition — the exacting technique of engraving designs into lacquer and inlaying gold, which reached its highest development in Wajima. In 1969 (Showa 44), he began his training under Mitani Goichi (三谷吾一, 1919–2017), a Japan Art Academy Member, Cultural Merit recipient, and one of the supreme masters of chinkin lacquerware in 20th-century Japan. Hoegi has been accepted into the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (Nitten) and has exhibited nine consecutive times in the Japan Contemporary Art and Craft Exhibition, where he was elevated to full membership. He has received the Governor of Ishikawa Prefecture Award and the highest prize (Technical Excellence Award) at the Ishikawa Prefectural Contemporary Craft Art Exhibition, among numerous other accolades. Since 1985, his works have been accepted for non-juried (免鑑査) exhibition at the Ishikawa Prefectural Exhibition — the highest recognition of consistent artistic achievement in that venue. He is a member of the Japan Contemporary Art and Craft Artists Association and the Wajima City Contemporary Art and Craft Artists Association.
