Description
[Unused / Pristine Condition] A Beautiful Pair of Signed Matcha Tea Bowls with Imperial Poetry Themes: "Haru" (Spring) & "Sora" (Sky)
This exquisite set of two Japanese matcha bowls (Chawan) carries a profound cultural significance, rooted in the centuries-old tradition of the Japanese Imperial Family. In Japan, the Emperor hosts a traditional New Year's Poetry Reading (Utakai-hajime), and each year a specific "Imperial Theme" (Odae/Chokudai) is selected. Tea ceremony practitioners often celebrate these themes by using specially crafted utensils that reflect the chosen poetic motif.
The Themes:
"Haru" (Spring): Inspired by the Imperial theme of 2002. This bowl features vibrant, energetic brushwork on a soft white glaze with delicate "Gohonde" (warm orange misty spots), symbolizing the awakening of life in spring.
"Sora" (Sky): Inspired by the Imperial theme of 1993. This piece captures a serene landscape with soft mountain silhouettes under an expansive sky, representing peace and clarity.
Craftsmanship:
Both bowls are handcrafted in the traditional Raku-ware style, known for its soft texture and "Wabi-sabi" aesthetic. They are signed by the artist "shozō " on the bottom and come with their original decorated boxes and traditional yellow protective cloths (Ukon-nuno) bearing the artist's seal.
