Kôro 香炉(censer) - 銅綠青銅 - 日本 - 明治時期(1868-1912)

A striking square bronze censer 香炉 (kôro) supported on four sturdy legs emerging from stylised dragon heads with swirling detailing extending downwards towards the hook-shaped feet. The square body is designed with a flat everted rim and fitted with a pair of upright loop handles rising from opposite sides. Two sides of the censer are adorned with a dynamic dragon 龍 (ryû) chasing a flaming pearl amidst swirling clouds, symbolising power and auspicious energy. While the other two panels finely depict the first part of the poem “Second Ode to the Red Cliffs” written by the Chinese poet Su Shi 蘇軾 (1037–1101), describing the serene autumn scene, the poet’s reflection, and the impromptu wine and fish picnic with friends. Underside with a 6-character seal: "Made in the Xuande period of the Great Ming (Dynasty)" 大明宣德年制. It is an a tribute mark rather than a true date. From the Edo period onward many Chinese and Japanese bronzes used these marks as a sign of admiration for Ming craftsmanship. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912). Dimensions: Height 31.5 cm, Width 25.5 cm (handle to handle), Depth 25 cm. Weight: approx. 5,100 g In a very good condition with some signs of use and wear commensurate with age, along with some casting irregularities adding character to the piece. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
