Two Landscape Paintings 1. Title: Mountain Landscape on Gold Leaf Ground (群青远山図) Artist: Kuni Yū (國裕) Medium: Hand-painted Japanese painting (Nihonga, 日本画) Marks: Artist’s signature and red seal Paper size: 20.5 × 30.5 cm (8.07 × 12.01 in) Frame size: 44 × 55.8 × 2 cm (17.32 × 21.97 × 0.79 in) Material: Washi paper (和紙,with scattered mica or silver flecks) This is a beautiful hand-painted Japanese mountain landscape with a minimalist modern composition, set against a gold leaf ground. The deep ultramarine blue mountain forms create a strong visual contrast with the gold leaf background, expressing an elegant Eastern modern aesthetic. It was created by the Japanese artist Kuni Yū (國裕), circa 1950s–1960s. The work is laid on a gold leaf base, with steep distant mountain outlines painted in rich, dense natural mineral pigment (likely ultramarine). Only simple forms and layers are retained. The gold leaf background shows a warm, gentle luster under light, forming a sharp contrast of cool and warm tones, solid and void, with the deep blue mountains. The composition features ample negative space and extreme minimalism, retaining the lofty, distant spirit of traditional Eastern landscape painting while achieving modern abstract and artistic quality. It embodies the Japanese aesthetic ideals of yūgen (幽玄,mystery and subtle depth) and wabi-sabi (侘寂,quiet simplicity). The blue mountains symbolize stability and loftiness; the gold leaf background represents light and nobility, making this a classic auspicious theme in modern Japanese painting. In the lower-left corner, the artist’s signature “Yū” (裕) is written in gold ink. Below it is a square red seal “Kuni Yū (國裕)”. This work comes with its original silver frame with acrylic glazing. The frame shows wear consistent with age and use, including paint loss, scuffs, and minor bumps. The artwork displays natural age-related oxidation, but remains in good overall condition with complete artistic integrity. 2. Title: Snowfield (Setsugen/雪原) Artist: Nishikawa Atsushi (西川篤,b. 1938) Technique: Lithograph with hand-coloring Signature: Signed and numbered in pencil by the artist Edition: 3/100, limited edition of 100 Image size: approx. 28 × 38 cm (11.0 × 15.0 in) Frame size: 43 × 53 × 2.6 cm (16.9 × 20.9 × 1.0 in) Paper: Bristol paper This serene and minimalist landscape print was created by Nishikawa Atsushi (西川篤), a leading artist in Japanese contemporary creative printmaking, during the 1980s–1990s. It is a limited-edition lithograph with hand-coloring from his “Natural Scenery” series, of which only 100 pieces were issued; this is number 3. Nishikawa is a member of the Japan Artists Association. He has been selected for many exhibitions including the New Artists Exhibition and the International Fantasy Exhibition, and has received numerous awards such as the All-Japan Student Oil Painting Competition Prize and the Best Instructor Award at the Children’s Art Grand Prix. He has held many solo and group exhibitions. His artistic style focuses on minimalist and tranquil natural scenery, using clean colors and composition to create a deep sense of Eastern Zen. The work portrays a quiet moment on a winter snowfield with an extremely simple composition: pure white snow covers the ground, a winding blue-green river flows through, with small pieces of ice floating on the surface, and the unfrozen water implies the tenacity of life. Slender, bare trees stand sparsely in the snowfield; their thin branches form layers against the hazy pale purple distant mountains and the pink-orange gradient of the dusk sky. The cool tones of the snow gently contrast with the warm tones of the sky. The overall atmosphere is calm and peaceful, full of Eastern Zen and the beauty of wabi-sabi, expressing the purity of nature, the slowness of time, and the subtle vitality of winter. “Snowfield (Setsugen / 雪原)” symbolizes the purity and tranquility of nature. The bare trees and the unfrozen river suggest the resilience of life, reflecting the Japanese aesthetic concepts of wabi-sabi and mono no aware, and expressing reverence and praise for the winter landscape. The edition number 3/100 is written in pencil at the lower-left corner, and the artist’s pencil signature is at the lower-right corner. The frame is fitted with a metal nameplate, and the backboard includes the artist’s biography and work label, which clearly state the technique, edition, and artist information. This work is sold with its original wooden frame (without glass panel). The frame shows signs of use including paint loss, rubbing, and bumps. As the frame backboard is fixed, it is not possible to photograph details on the reverse of the paper. Due to its age, the paper shows natural aging and minor surface scratches. Overall, the condition is good.
