Ancient Roman Bronze Ring with Confronted Eagles and Altar- Circa 2nd–4th century CE
Material: Bronze
Weight: 3.35 g
Inner Diameter: 16.6–17.7 mm
Description:
A cast bronze Roman ring of characteristic Imperial form, featuring a D-shaped hoop expanding to an oval bezel. The bezel is engraved in relief with a symmetrical composition: two confronted eagles flanking a central altar or standard. The motif is rendered in a stylized but legible manner, consistent with provincial Roman workmanship.
The hoop is solid and slightly irregular, tapering toward the shoulders. The bezel is integrally cast and gently raised, with wear consistent with long-term use and burial.
Iconography:
The eagle (aquila) is a central symbol in Roman culture, associated with Jupiter and the Roman legions. The depiction of two eagles facing a central altar or standard suggests a connection to military or religious symbolism, possibly referencing ritual, sacrifice, or devotion within the imperial cult. Such motifs are known in Roman glyptic and minor metalwork, particularly in provincial contexts.
Condition:
Well preserved overall. The surface displays a stable and attractive olive-green patina with areas of mineral encrustation. The engraved design remains visible despite moderate wear. No visible modern restoration or tooling.
Typology and Attribution:
This example belongs to a group of Roman bronze rings widely produced during the Imperial period, especially from the 2nd to 4th centuries AD. Rings of this type were commonly worn as personal adornment and may also have functioned as symbolic or identity markers. The use of a relief engraving rather than intaglio suggests it was not primarily intended for sealing but rather for display.
Provenance:
From a European private collection, acquired in the late 1990s.
A provenance document can be provided in PDF format upon request.
Remarks
A well-preserved and aesthetically appealing Roman ring with a desirable and meaningful motif. The confronted eagle design is uncommon and adds to the historical and collectible value of the piece.
