This mantel clock with a mechanism manufactured by Telephone Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TMC) in England is a representative example of mid-20th-century British electric clockmaking. It runs on alternating current of 200 to 250 volts and 50 Hz, in line with the British electrical standard of the time. To start it up, it incorporates a control knob that must be turned in the direction indicated by the arrow marked with the letter S, a system typical of synchronous electric clocks that required an initial impulse to synchronize with the mains frequency.
The case is made of dark wood, featuring a classic mantel clock design that includes a stepped base, decorative sides, and a top in the shape of a pediment. The dial is square, with a metal frame and a cream-toned background. It features clear, legible numerals, minute markers, and black hands in a simple style. On the dial appears the brand TEMCO ELECTRIC, used commercially for clocks equipped with TMC movements.
This type of watch is valued as a collectible piece and also as a museum object, as it represents an important stage in the transition between traditional mechanical watchmaking and home electrification. Its robust mechanism and its distinctive design make it a historical testament to the electrical technology applied to timekeeping.
Although it still works, given its age it needs adjustments to function perfectly.
