A magnificent survivor of British Colonial medical history. This leather-bound apothecary carry case was manufactured for Rogers & Co., the premier chemists of the Bombay Presidency, with branches in both Poona and Bombay. Designed for the elite traveler or medical officer of the Victorian Raj travelling across the vast landscapes of 19th-century India.
The case opens to reveal an interior housing a diverse assortment of 19th-century apothecary bottles clearly added at different times, including rare cobalt blue and amber glass, many with original glass stoppers. These chests were the lifeline of the British elite in India, containing the essential tinctures and powders required to combat tropical diseases. The inside is elegantly gold-tooled with the maker's mark, standing as a testament to the pharmaceutical craftsmanship of the Victorian Raj.
Condition Report:
The leather case is in antique condition, showing a rich patina and honest wear consistent with historical travel. The black leather interior intact, and the glass bottles are well-preserved with no major chips or cracks. A unique centrepiece for any collection of colonial or medical history.
