Four Boar Tusk Nose Ornaments – Highlands of West Papua (Field Collected, 1990s)
A rare and authentic set of four boar tusks, traditionally used as nose ornaments by highland communities in West Papua. These ornaments were field collected in the 1990s and represent an important aspect of male adornment and status within Papuan highland cultures.
Each tusk has been carefully selected and shows natural variation in size, curvature, and patina, reflecting both age and use. Such ornaments were typically worn during ceremonial occasions, initiations, or as markers of prestige and identity.
The boar holds deep cultural significance in the highlands, symbolizing wealth, strength, and social standing. Nose ornaments fashioned from tusks were therefore not merely decorative, but carried strong symbolic meaning.
A compelling and increasingly scarce ethnographic set, ideal for collectors of Oceanic tribal art and material culture.

Alongside my passion for these unique cultural objects, I recently published my book Ik droomde dat je kwam, in which I describe personal encounters and experiences in Papua. The spirit of objects like this necklace lives on in those stories.
