The gong is struck during sutra chanting and religious rituals, marking transitions and emphasising moments of prayer. The set represents a refined example of Japanese Buddhist art, combining metalwork, lacquer craftsmanship, and wood carving. The bronze gong plate is decorated in bold relief with a pair of phoenix birds, symbols of peace and renewal, surrounding a central lotus flower, which represents purity and spiritual awakening. The carving is strong and expressive, with clear depth and presence. The stand is finished in traditional vermilion lacquer. The upper crown section features finely carved cloud motifs and a raised lotus design, highlighted with lacquer mixed with gold powder. The elegant curved legs give the structure a dignified and ceremonial appearance. The gong is suspended by a thick orange braided cord, adding visual richness and reinforcing its ritual character. There are signs of age including surface wear, small scratches, stains, and discolouration. Both upper sides of the wooden frame have noticeable cracks; one side shows evidence of adhesive repair. The base has slight instability. There is overall lacquer peeling and small losses throughout. The original striking stick is missing. The structure is designed to be assembled; the upper section can be removed, but the remaining parts are tight and have not been forced apart to avoid damage. Please refer to the photos for details.
