A fine Ancient Egyptian amulet of the dwarf god Bes, made from blue faience. The deity is in a squat position with his legs bent and his hands resting on his hips. The god is depicted wearing a plumed headdress consisting of ostrich feathers. He is presented in a grotesque manner with a grimaced face and protruding ears. The reverse is flat and unadorned. The amulet has been pierced has been pierced through the top for suspension. Some earthly encrustations, pitting and chips to the surface and edges.
The Egyptians wore amulets alongside other pieces of jewellery. They were decorative, but also served a practical purpose, being considered to bestow power and protection upon the wearer. Many of the amulets have been found inside the wrappings of mummies, as they were used to prepare the deceased for the afterlife.
