A superb and generously sized Chinese export porcelain plate, finely painted in underglaze cobalt blue during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor (1662–1722), circa 1700. The central medallion is delicately composed with an elegant floral scroll, issuing from a stylised rosette and forming a harmonious and balanced composition of blossoming flowers and leafy tendrils. The brushwork is fluid and assured, displaying the refinement and vitality characteristic of the Kangxi period. The broad cavetto and rim are decorated with a continuous garden scene incorporating bamboo, prunus, and pine—collectively representing the celebrated “Three Friends of Winter” (岁寒三友). These auspicious motifs symbolise resilience, steadfastness, and longevity, and are rendered here with remarkable clarity and decorative rhythm. Interspersed rockwork and vegetal elements further enhance the dynamic composition. This type of decoration belongs to a well-documented group of high-quality export wares produced at Jingdezhen for both domestic appreciation and international markets at the turn of the 18th century. Notably, one closely related example was collected by Augustus the Strong and is today preserved in the renowned porcelain collections of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, attesting to the enduring appeal and prestige of such pieces among Europe’s greatest early collectors of Chinese porcelain.
