Key Details:

Origin: Mexico
Estimated Period: 1970 - 1980
Material: Wood, Fabric (Felt/Velvet), Crushed Malachite / Patinated Resin
Condition: Good - Used with age-related wear (Please see the detailed condition report)
Detailed Description:
An exceptional and highly decorative piece, perfect for exotic interior designs, "Tiki" bars, or classic European Wunderkammer (Cabinet of Curiosities) collections!
Brought from Mexico to Europe during the 1970s or 1980s, this spectacular "Piedra del Sol" (Aztec Sun Stone / Maya Calendar) relief stands out with its intricate craftsmanship and bold color palette. At the heart of the circular relief lies the iconic face of the Aztec sun god, Tonatiuh, surrounded by detailed astronomical symbols and calendar glyphs. The relief itself is meticulously cast from a mixture of crushed malachite stone powder and resin, finished with a stunning, oxidized antique green bronze patina.
To create a highly dramatic and theatrical contrast, this mesmerizing green relief is mounted on a vibrant red fabric background (resembling felt or velvet). The artwork is beautifully encased within a solid, octagonal wooden frame. Adding to its depth and visual integrity, the inner edges of the frame are decorated with a matching green relief border featuring Aztec-style glyphs.
This piece effortlessly captures the mystical aura of Mesoamerican history, making it an absolute eye-catcher for any vintage or retro-themed room.
Condition Report:
Front: In excellent vintage condition. The malachite green relief details and the vibrant red background retain their original vividness. There are no missing pieces or chips on the main frontal relief.
Back & Frame: The exterior surfaces of the wooden frame show minor, age-related scuffs and friction marks. There is a noticeable break/chip on the bottom right edge of the plywood backing (Please refer closely to the detailed photographs).
Important Note: This damage is strictly confined to the rear plywood backing. When the piece is hung on a wall, this flaw is completely invisible from the front and does not compromise the visual aesthetics or structural integrity of the artwork in any way.
The original wire hanging mechanism and a partial "Made in Mexico" sticker are still present on the reverse side.
