古火 — 信楽焼花瓶,天然灰釉,由大师陶艺家大原薫之作 - 石器 - 大原薫 Ohara Kaoru(1939-) - 日本 - 1900–2000

Item Description 大原薫 Ohara Kaoru(1939-) This exceptional Shigaraki-ware flower vase is a masterwork by acclaimed ceramicist Ohara Kaoru, born in 1939 in Shigaraki-cho, Shiga Prefecture — the very birthplace of one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. The vase presents a bold, elongated cylindrical form with a dramatically irregular, jagged rim that evokes the raw, elemental power of nature — as though the vessel itself has burst open from within. The surface exhibits the characteristic beauty of authentic Shigaraki-yaki: a richly textured, sandy clay body adorned with natural bidoro (ash glaze) spotting in soft jade green and white, cascading over a gradient that transitions from warm ochre at the base through deep indigo-grey toward the crown. This interplay of fire color (hi-iro), scorch marks (koge), and vitrified ash creates a landscape that is entirely unique and unrepeatable — a dialogue between the potter, the clay, and the flame. The vase arrives in its original wooden presentation box (tomobako), inscribed with the title 「信楽窯 花瓶」and bearing the artist's seal, providing confident attribution. Ideal as a statement piece for ikebana (Japanese floral arrangement) or as a standalone sculptural object, this work exemplifies the wabi-sabi aesthetic — finding profound beauty in the imperfect, the irregular, and the natural. Size Height: 23.5 cm Width: 14 cm Depth: 14 cm Weight 1,588 g Condition This vase is in excellent condition with no significant damage, chips, or cracks; the irregular jagged rim is entirely intentional and characteristic of the artist's sculptural style, not the result of damage. Artist Profile 大原薫 Ohara Kaoru(1939-) Ohara Kaoru was born in 1939 in Shigaraki-cho, Shiga Prefecture, the historic center of one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. A distinguished master of Shigaraki-yaki, he has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the Excellence Award at the Shiga Prefecture Shigaraki Ceramics Exhibition, the Excellence Award at the Shigaraki Ceramic Arts Exhibition (65th edition), and the Grand Prize at the Shigaraki Ceramic Ware General Exhibition. His works have been selected for major national and international exhibitions, including the Japan-China International Ceramics Exhibition, the Asahi Ceramics Exhibition (5 times), the Shin-Nihon Ceramics Exhibition, the World Ceramics Festival, and the Kaikoku 250 Creative Works Exhibition. He is a member of the Japan New Crafts Artists Federation and the Contemporary Shiga Crafts Artists Association, and holds the designation of Traditional Craftsman (Dento Kogei-shi) in recognition of his lifelong dedication to the Shigaraki ceramic tradition.
