An outstanding, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined Kanô School-style painting depicting a tranquil landscape with a gathering of cranes 鶴 (tsuru). A serene composition unfolds around a calm river, where a gathering of cranes 鶴 (tsuru) is shown in a peaceful setting. Among them are Red-crowned Cranes 丹頂鶴 (tanchô-zuru) and White-naped Cranes 真鶴 (mana-zuru) with their chicks, standing and foraging along the water’s edge. Young pine saplings 松 (matsu) grow along the riverbanks. In the distance, mountain peaks emerge subtly through dense gold leaf clouds. In Japanese symbolism, cranes and pine trees form a classic pairing associated with longevity and good fortune. Cranes are believed to live for a thousand years, while pine trees represent endurance and steadfastness. Executed in natural pigments and ink on mulberry paper with gold leaf. The painting is bordered by two silk trims: a slender ecru brocade inner band and a broad dark gold outer band. Set within a red lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware.
