A charming patinated bronze ikebana usubata 薄端 (flower arrangement vase) cast in the form of a toad. Naturalistically cast in bronze, The frog looks up while spitting up a swirling stream of water which will carry the arced basin. The basin with a raided circular edge in the centre, with a small hole so the water can spread in both areas in top. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912) Dimensions: Height 29.3 cm, Diameter basin 18 cm Weight: 1.99 kg In very good condition, with minimal traces of wear consistent with age. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition. Toads appear in various Japanese folk traditions and legends. One well-known example is the story of the ninja Jiraiya, who was said to possess magical powers allowing him to transform into a giant toad. The toad is also associated with Gama Sennin, the “Toad Immortal,” inspired by the Chinese alchemist Liu Hai, who was believed to have learned the secrets of immortality from a magical three-legged toad. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
