Aka-raku Tea Bowl - Inoue Shunpo (3rd generation) - 茶碗 - 陶器

Item Description 平安春峰 Inoue Shunpo (1950–) This elegant aka-raku chawan (red raku tea bowl) titled "Shunpo" is a hand-formed work in the classic Kyoto raku tradition. The bowl features a striking two-toned composition: a warm terracotta-red glaze (aka-raku) sweeps across the lower portion, while a crackle-textured white slip (shiro-kesho) covers the upper body, creating a bold natural division reminiscent of a mountain landscape or the break of dawn. Across the white ground, a vigorous brushwork design in iron pigment depicts bold, calligraphic strokes — a sweeping horizontal line and an abstract vertical mark — evoking the expressive freedom of ink painting (sumi-e). The crackle pattern (kannyu) in the white glaze adds depth and age, lending the piece a sense of quiet history and wabi aesthetic. The form is hand-built (tezukune) in the raku manner, with a gently irregular profile and a compact, modest foot ring (kodai) characteristic of Japanese tea ceremony wares. The interior is glazed in warm white with natural variations. This is a highly tactile and expressive piece, ideally suited for usucha (thin tea) preparation in the chanoyu tradition. The title "Shunpo" — meaning "Spring Peak" — evokes the season of renewal and the clarity of high mountain air, themes beautifully expressed in the bold brushwork and serene glaze. Size Height: 8 cm Width: 12 cm Weight 297 g Condition This tea bowl is in very good condition, showing no chips, cracks, or repairs; the crackle glaze is an intentional decorative feature of the raku firing technique and not a defect. Artist Profile 平安春峰 Inoue Shunpo (1950–) is a third-generation Kyoto ceramicist working under the studio name Heian Shunpo, a designation rooted in the classical cultural heritage of Kyoto (formerly known as Heian-kyo). Born in 1950 as the eldest son of the second-generation Shunpo, he studied ceramic glaze research at the Kyoto Municipal Industrial Research Institute before training formally under his father. In 1997, he succeeded to the title of third-generation Inoue Shunpo, also receiving recognition as a Ōbaku (Zen Buddhist) ceramic master from Manpuku-ji Temple. He is a permanent board member of the Japan Sencha Craft Association and has held solo exhibitions at major venues including Mitsukoshi department store in Tokyo. His works are highly regarded in tea ceremony and sencha circles for their technical refinement and classical Kyoto sensibility. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Shipping & Important Notice [Shipping] Your item will be carefully packaged and shipped from Japan via Japan Post, DHL, or FedEx with a tracking number.
