Born in 1950 as the eldest son of the second-generation Shunpo, he studied ceramic glaze research at the Kyoto Municipal Industrial Research Institute before training formally under his father. In 1997, he succeeded to the title of third-generation Inoue Shunpo, also receiving recognition as a Ōbaku (Zen Buddhist) ceramic master from Manpuku-ji Temple.
