A large and beautiful scalloped Imari bowl adorned with trees, flowers and two phoenix/birds in red, orange and gold on a blue underglaze, dating from the Meiji-period. The decorations are highly detailed and were applied with great control over the brush. The verso shows one spur mark, a stylised orchid and the characters 深川製, meaning 'Fukagawa Sei', or 'Made by Fukagawa'. The company was founded by Ezaiemon Fukagawa in 1875 as Fukagawa or Koransha, 'The Company of the Scented Orchid'. The object has some wear on the gold decorations and one chip has been repaired in the past (as pictured), but overall the condition is very good indeed.
