A refined Japanese Hagi ware chawan (tea bowl), presented with its original wooden box (tomobako) and accompanying documentation, reflecting both traditional craftsmanship and historical context.
This piece is an example of Aohagi (青萩), a distinctive style within Hagi ceramics characterized by its soft bluish-grey glaze, natural crackling (kannyu), and earthy clay body.
The bowl displays a gently flared form with a well-balanced profile, embodying the understated elegance of tea aesthetics. The glaze transitions organically across the surface, revealing subtle tones of grey, olive, and warm brown, enhanced by iron-rich spotting and natural kiln effects.
The interior shows a beautifully developed glaze pool, with fine crackling patterns that evolve over time, a hallmark of Hagi ware known as “the seven transformations” (Hagi no nanabake).
The foot (kodai) is strongly formed, exposing the coarse clay body and firing marks, emphasizing its handmade character and authenticity.
The tomobako bears handwritten inscriptions identifying the piece as Aohagi, along with the potter’s name. Additionally, the included booklet provides further background on the Hagi ware tradition and lineage, adding historical and cultural depth to the piece.
This chawan is highly suitable for tea ceremony use and also stands as a collectible object representing one of Japan’s most celebrated ceramic traditions.
