Item Description:
A striking cast-metal flower vase (hanaire, 花器) in the ajiro (網代) wickerwork pattern, in the elongated tsurukubi-gata (鶴首型, "crane-neck") form — produced by the celebrated Takaoka Dōki (高岡銅器) metalwork tradition and signed Zuihō (瑞峰).
Cast in bronze-toned metal using the lost-wax (chūkin, 鋳金) technique, the entire surface is dressed in a precisely rendered basket-weave (ajiro) relief texture that mimics the appearance of woven bamboo, an effect that demands exceptional skill to achieve uniformly across a complex curved form.
The vase's most arresting feature is the three-dimensional sculptural group applied to the neck: a bird in vivid mid-flight, perched over a naturalistic spray of leaves and fruit — each feather and leaf individually defined with remarkable precision.
The contrast between the regular geometric surface pattern and this freely modelled naturalistic ornament is a hallmark of the finest Takaoka decorative metalwork.
The graceful crane-neck silhouette — a bulbous teardrop body rising to a long, straight cylindrical neck — is a classic form in Japanese flower arranging, designed to display a single stem with quiet elegance.
An outstanding example of Takaoka's metalworking heritage, equally suited to a collection of decorative art or a refined interior setting.

Artist Profile
瑞峰 Zuihō — Takaoka Dōki (高岡銅器)
Zuihō is a distinguished artistic name associated with the Takaoka Dōki (高岡銅器) metalwork tradition of Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture — a craft lineage with over 400 years of history, originating when the second lord of the Kaga domain, Maeda Toshinaga, invited master casters to establish workshops in the castle town in 1611. Takaoka Dōki is renowned for its mastery of casting (chūkin), surface engraving (chōkin), and relief decoration, and accounts for over 90% of all decorative metalwork produced in Japan. The tradition was designated a national Traditional Craft (Dentō Kōgeihin) in 1975. Works bearing the Zuihō signature are produced by Saga Kōgyō Co., Ltd. (佐賀工業株式会社), one of the established workshops within the Takaoka metalwork community, continuing the region's centuries-old craft tradition.
