Masks of this type are used in traditional Japanese performing arts such as Noh and Kyogen, and this example expresses a joyful and auspicious character with its warm, smiling expression. The forehead is carved with a hoju (sacred jewel motif), traditionally associated with divine power and good fortune. This mask is typically used in Kyogen plays such as “Fukunokami,” where the deity appears to bestow happiness and prosperity. The teeth are finished in black (ohaguro), a historical custom in Japan that symbolized beauty, maturity, and aristocratic status. In theatrical masks, this feature is often used to represent deities, noble figures, or married women, adding an additional layer of cultural meaning. The carving makes effective use of the natural wood grain, creating a warm and lifelike surface. Fine details such as the eyebrows, moustache, and hairline are carefully hand-painted with delicate brushwork. The reverse shows clear and confident chisel marks, finished with a glossy surface that reflects the craftsmanship of the maker. Fair to good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use, including surface wear, and discoloration. The cord is missing. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions: approx. H 19.3 cm W 13.6 cm D 7 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
