Item Description
Title of Artwork: Takaoka Doki Double-Handle Vase — Pheasant & Peony Relief with Dragon Handles by Zuiho
高岡銅器 Takaoka Doki "瑞峰 Zuiho" Special Alloy Double-Handle Vase with Pheasant and Peony Relief
A remarkable example of Takaoka Doki (Takaoka copperware) craftsmanship, this double-handled vase is cast in a special alloy (tokushu shingōkin) and finished with Takaoka's signature polychrome patination in deep iridescent blues, greens, and burgundy. The bulbous body is encircled by a bold relief band depicting pheasants striding amid peonies — one of the most auspicious motifs in Japanese and Chinese decorative arts.
The pheasant 雉, Japan's national bird, symbolizes literary refinement and nobility, while the peony 椿 — known as the "king of flowers" — represents wealth, prosperity, and high status. Together, this pairing was considered the supreme good-omen motif and was a favored subject among the finest Meiji and Showa-era metalwork. Two sculptural dragon-head handles sweep upward from the shoulder, each rendered with fine scaled detail in blue enamel tones.
The trumpet neck and stepped foot ring frame the composition with elegant symmetry. The base bears a cast maker's seal reading "Zuiho / Tokushu Shingōkin-sei" (Special Alloy, made by Zuiho). Takaoka Doki, designated as Japan's first National Traditional Craft in 1975, has been produced in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, for over 400 years.

Artist Profile
Zuiho is a craftsman's name (gō) used within the Takaoka Doki tradition of Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture. Works bearing the Zuiho seal are produced in special alloy (tokushu shingōkin), a proprietary metal alloy developed in the Takaoka region, and are characterized by richly patinated surfaces achieved through Takaoka's centuries-old coloring techniques. Takaoka Doki was the first craft in Japan to receive National Traditional Craft designation in 1975.
