Bright orange cornelian intaglio deeply engraved with a rare Gryllos motif consisting of conjoined heads of a satyr with pointed horns, a dolphin holding a ear of wheat in its mouth, and the tentacles of a sea creature. Gryllos were a type of grotesque caricature typically blending human heads with human or animal parts. These hybrid images were often engraved on gems as protective amulets to avert the evil eye.
