賣家描述
antique altar set consisting of a cross and two candlesticks, ca. 1900.
An authentic antique Orthodox altar set composed of a standing cross and a matching pair of candlesticks, originating from the Eastern European, most likely Russian Orthodox cultural sphere, and dating to circa 1900 (late 19th – early 20th century).
The cross is constructed with a wooden core, onto which the figure of Christ (corpus) is mounted, and partially covered with metal elements. This combination of wood and metal is characteristic for devotional objects intended for regular liturgical or domestic use.
The surface shows areas of lighter metallic tone, suggesting that the cross was likely originally silvered or partially silver-plated. The base metal appears to be a non-ferrous alloy (likely brass or nickel silver / alpaca). No official silver hallmarks are visible.
The reverse of the cross displays a raw casting texture along with workshop and production-related marks, including square matrix impressions. These are typical for manufacturing processes of the period and should not be interpreted as silver marks.
Iconography:
The lower part of the cross features a ladder motif, a traditional symbol associated with the Passion of Christ.
The upper section contains a worn and highly stylised motif, possibly representing a halo or mandorla.
The arms of the cross show simplified devotional elements, consistent with objects produced for everyday religious use.
The accompanying candlesticks are made in a matching style and form a coherent and complete altar ensemble.
Condition:
Good antique condition with visible signs of age, wear and oxidation.
Partial loss of surface finish.
An old repair is visible on the reverse of the cross (see photos).
Note:
Numerous traces of use and natural patina testify to the long devotional life of this altar set and give it a strong historical character.
Good antique condition with visible signs of age and wear.
Minor old solder marks are visible on the reverse, consistent with age and use.
Complete Orthodox altar sets of this type are increasingly difficult to find on the market
