Greek Terracotta Votive Kore – 6th/5th c. BC – Ex Amb. Alain Grenier Collection
Description
An exquisite and rarely intact Greek terracotta votive figure of a Kore (young maiden), dating to the late Archaic or early Classical period (Late 6th - Early 5th Century BC). This piece exemplifies the Eastern Mediterranean/Ionian stylistic influence with its columnar (truncated cone) lower body serving as its original self-supporting base.
Manufacturing Technique: Produced using a bivalve mold (two-part mold). The figure is hollow, featuring its original ventilation hole on the reverse—a critical technical detail used to prevent the clay from exploding during the firing process in antiquity.
Surface & Detail: The surface retains significant traces of the original white engobe (slip), which originally served as a base for polychrome pigments. The facial features, while softened by time, still retain the dignified expression characteristic of the period.
Dimensions: Height 75 mm.
Weight: 35.67 g.
Condition Report
Remarkably Intact. Unlike the vast majority of terracotta figurines from this period, this piece is preserved in its original manufactured state. It has no repairs, no modern fractures, and no restorations. The truncated base is the original ancient termination. Natural surface erosion consistent with age.
Provenance
Ex. Private Collection of Alain Grenier (1930-2022), former Ambassador of France.
The piece bears original hand-painted inventory numbers in yellow on the reverse, a physical testament to its long-standing history within a prestigious European diplomatic collection.
