Shino Chawan — Tea Bowl in Hakeme
Shino ware carries a weight of history that few ceramics can match.
Originating in the Mino region during the Momoyama period, it stands as one of the earliest glazed wares to emerge from a distinctly Japanese aesthetic sensibility — shaped not in imitation of Chinese precedents, but in direct response to the wabi spirit of the tea ceremony.
The glaze is a feldspar compound, fired thick and slow.
It breathes. It blisters. It catches flame color at the rim.
Aesthetic & Tactile Details
Here, the Hakeme technique drives the surface into motion.
A brush loaded with white slip sweeps across the clay body in broad, overlapping strokes — not decorating, but constructing the texture itself.
The result moves: a band of deep iron-rust Hi-iro cuts horizontally across the lower body,
where the slip thins and the iron-rich clay beneath asserts itself.
Above and below, the feldspar glaze pools into muted grey-white, absorbing the kiln atmosphere and holding it.
The form follows a restrained, cylindrical logic — slightly compressed at the shoulder, opening gently at the rim.
The kodai sits low and grounded.
Tsuchi-aji radiates from the unglazed base: coarse, raw, honest.
The potter's seal is hand-carved directly into the clay beneath the foot — not stamped, but cut one stroke at a time.
This bowl performs differently in each light.
Morning diffuse, it reads as ash and earth.
Under direct light, the Hi-iro band ignites.
Artist Profile
Asahi Morio (旭 守男) is a contemporary ceramicist working within the Mino ware tradition,
based in Kani City, Gifu Prefecture, where he operates his own kiln, Asahi-gama.
He completed the advanced program at Gifu Prefectural Tajimi Industrial High School in 2015,
and has since established a consistent presence in Japan's most competitive ceramic exhibitions:
selected multiple times for the Contemporary Tea Ceramics Exhibition (Gendai Chadou-ten) in 2018, 2024, and 2025;
selected for the Mino Ceramics Exhibition in 2015, 2017, and 2019;
and recipient of the Chief Judge Special Award at the Meshi-wan Grand Prix in 2015.
Working directly with raw materials — including locally sourced weathered feldspar from the Toki area —
he brings an uncompromising commitment to Tsuchi-aji and material integrity.
His Shino works are known for vigorous hand-forming, expressive Hakeme surface treatment,
and the vivid Hi-iro that emerges when iron-rich clay meets feldspar glaze in the kiln.
His work is held and exhibited at the Shino-Oribe Roadside Station,
a curated venue dedicated to leading Mino ware artists,
where he has held solo gallery presentations.
He is recognized as one of the next generation of Mino ceramics.
