Set of 6 Uranium Glass Wine Glasses – “Lothaire” Service, Val Saint Lambert, ca. 1900
An elegant set of six antique wine glasses from the Lothaire service by Val Saint Lambert, dating to the late 19th – early 20th century. Crafted in finely worked glass (demi-crystal), these pieces reflect the refined decorative language of the period, at the transition toward Art Nouveau.
The model is documented in the reference book “Verreries et Cristalleries Namuroises du XVIIIe Siècle à Nos Jours”, where it is dated around 1900, confirming both authenticity and its place within Belgian glass production.
Each glass is decorated using acid-etched decoration — a delicate technique that creates a soft, matte pattern of interlacing loops and wave motifs. This refined ornament contrasts beautifully with the clarity of the glass. The elegant baluster stems further enhance the classic silhouette of the service.
Under UV light, the glass reveals a vivid green fluorescence, characteristic of uranium glass and highly appreciated by collectors.
It is important to note that while all six glasses belong to the same Lothaire model, slight variations in tone and proportions can be observed. This is typical for antique production and handmade finishing, and clearly visible in the photos.
Condition: overall very good antique condition, with minor imperfections consistent with age and production techniques (see photos).
A refined and increasingly collectible set, ideal for elegant table settings or as a distinctive addition to a collection of antique Belgian glass.
Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks.
The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp.
The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics.
Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation.
